In Alberta the rut usually begins November 10 to November 28 peaking around the 16th to 20th of November. As you are aware, a variety of factors come into play in determining when the rut actually begins and ends. Our deer populations are not like those of certain parts of the US. so don’t expect to observe continued partterns of activity, during the rut. because of this, our tactics may vary slightly depending on the intensity of rut conditions from week to week.

As stated previously, Alberta deer populations are lower compared to those of the U.S., however many areas of Alberta are currently considered very high by local biologists. You should see approx. 0-12 deer per day, 0-4 bucks per day, 10-30 deer per week, and 3-12 bucks per week.

What
are your success rates?
What is the average size of deer taken by your customers?
Trophy Quest hires knowledgable guides who continually scout the area. We maintain a high rate of opportunity for harvest. This being said, our opportunity rate is approx. 85 % to 95 % . With an actual harvest rate of approx. 65% .
Deer taken are
in the 140 inch to 200 inch gross category. Our average size would be between
150 and 160.

What method of hunting do you utilize?
Our goal is to ambush bucks in there natural movement. We hunt almost exclusively from tree stands, ground blinds and tower stands. While you are on your stand your guide is always scouting looking for other possible opportunities. Because of this, you normally will not hunt one stand exclusively for the week. 80 to 90 percent of your hunting will be done on stand with 10 to 20 percent of your hunting done with your guide, rattling or grunting for deer.

What
caliber of rifle do you recommend?
What is average shot distance?
This is a hard
question to answer. We suggest that you use nothing less than 270 cal. And
you do not require anything larger than a 300 cal.
It’s hard to say what a typical shot distance would be. An average might
fall somewhere between 75 and 150 yards. To maximize your chances, you need
to be good at shooting and judging distances. PRACTICE YOUR OFF HAND SHOOTING!

How does this "Gun Registration" system I have heard so much about work?
The Canadian
government requires that you register your fire arm upon entering the country.
It is a necessity and we prefer you don’t worry about it. It is not
complicated although it cost you $50.00 Cnd. When you book a hunt with us
you will receive some paperwork to fill out. Upon arrival, simply produce
the paperwork to customs and they will process the paperwork.

What type of clothing do you recommend?
We suggest that you utilize a good layering system. Hands, head, and feet should come as a priority. A warm bellaclava, boots rated to minus 40 or better are suggested, along with a good pair of insulated walking boots. Noise suppression is of utmost importance. We find fleece or wool camo clothing is what we find that works best for this. Please check our equipment list.
